

Speaking of HDR, the 499P9H is certified for DisplayHDR 400, the lowest rung on VESA's DisplayHDR scale, which means-first and foremost-that its luminance is at least 400 nits (candelas per meter squared). It also did well in displaying our standard test photos, as well as both SDR and HDR video. That said, based on my experience running trials of Final Fantasy XV, Hitman, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the 499P9H should be fine for casual gaming. The Brilliance 499P9H has a modest 60Hz refresh rate and includes support for AMD FreeSync, while the CHG90 has a gaming-friendly 144Hz refresh rate and supports AMD FreeSync 2, which is an improvement over the basic FreeSync, distinguished primarily by better HDR support. The 499P9H's built-in pair of 5-watt speakers pushes decent volume and sound quality, though they're not as powerful as the two 10-watt speakers found in the LG 49WL95C-W. The panel also has a 3.5mm audio jack for headphones or powered external speakers. It also has a built-in keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) switch for those who use want to use two discrete PCs with one monitor (i.e., this one), keyboard, and mouse. The 499P9H, like the LG and Dell 49-inch monitors, has a higher (109ppi) pixel density, which-all else being equal-should produce a sharper image. The CHG90's downside is a relatively low pixel density (81 pixels per inch, or ppi). This enables gamers to push higher frame rates for a given graphics card than would be possible with a 5K-horizontal monitor like these Philips, LG, or Dell models. It has the same strong 1800R curvature and ultra-wide 32:9 aspect ratio, but a lower native resolution of 3,840 by 1,080 pixels. The Brilliance 499P9H, the Dell U4919DW, and the LG 49WL95C-W are built primarily for business use the other 49-inch ultra-wide monitor we've reviewed, the Samsung CHG90, is built for gaming. LG doesn't give a curvature rating for the 49WL95C-W, but it is on the mild side, similar to that of the U4919DW. While the 499P9H has an 1800R curvature rating-meaning that if you were to place enough of these monitors side by side to form a circle, it would have a radius of 1,800mm, or 1.8 meters-the U4919DW has a much gentler 3800R curve.

The curves on the Dell U4919DW and LG 49WL95C-W are more modest. One difference among these panels is that the 499P9H's screen is more sharply curved, giving the viewer a particularly immersive experience.

The 499P9H's resolution and aspect ratio match those of the Dell UltraSharp 49 Curved Monitor (U4919DW) and the LG 49WL95C-W. This resolution is sometimes referred to as "double quad HD" (DQHD). The 49-inch vertical alignment (VA) panel in the Brilliance 499P9H packs in 5,120 by 1,440 pixels, the equivalent of two 27-inch QHD (2,560-by-1,440-pixel) monitors placed side by side, for an extra-wide 32:9 aspect ratio.
